This is the third course in the Multilingual Learners with Disabilities micro-credential series from Project Momentum. This course may be taken as a standalone professional learning experience or bundled with the full series to earn the micro-credential.
The purpose of this course is to examine legal, ethical, and instructional considerations for conducting culturally and linguistically responsive evaluations for multilingual learners.
Guiding Question: How do we evaluate legally and ethically?
School Psychologists, Special Education Teachers, Speech Language Pathologists and other specialists receive specialized training and preparation authorizing them to conduct and interpret special education assessments. This course does not serve that purpose.
The intention of this course is to:
- introduce considerations to team members not directly involved in administering assessments,
- reinforce these tenets to those who are, and
- encourage collaboration between Special Education and English Language Development (ELD) specialists.
This course focuses on special education evaluation. It assumes that a multidisciplinary team has been working collaboratively to apply a culturally and linguistically responsive lens throughout the pre-referral process and is confident in moving forward with a special education evaluation for a multilingual learner.
