Strengthen your practice. Connect language and disability. Better support the whole learner.
Multilingual learners with disabilities require educators to consider language development, disability, culture, educational history, and access to instruction together. This pathway brings multilingual education and special education perspectives together in one connected learning experience.

You will develop practical knowledge and tools to:
  • Distinguish language difference from disability when making instructional and referral decisions
  • Conduct culturally and linguistically responsive special education evaluations
  • Develop inclusive and effective IEPs
  • Coordinate ELD, special education, and general education services
  • Adapt supports for diverse multilingual learner profiles
  • Provide language-rich instruction for multilingual learners with significant disabilities
  • Center student and family voice in decision-making

A Connected Learning Pathway

The seven courses build on one another, moving from foundational knowledge and decision-making to planning, collaboration, and instruction.
Explore frameworks and decision-making tools to support accurate pre-referral decisions and reduce the risk of misidentification.
Examine legal, ethical, and instructional considerations for evaluating multilingual learners with suspected disabilities.
Develop responsive goals, services, and supports that address the needs of dually identified students.
Explore how ELD, special education, and general education professionals can coordinate instruction and services.
Examine targeted approaches for multilingual learners with disabilities whose educational trajectories and needs require additional consideration, including newcomers, students with limited or interrupted formal education, and long-term English learners.
Optional Course: Explore language-rich instruction and communication supports for multilingual learners with significant cognitive disabilities.
